BEER OF THE DAY: Maine Brewing Co, Mean Old Tom, Freeport, ME
I love that Maine Brewing is a little easier to find in the DMV these days because they have such a good rep amongst beer lovers. Plus, I love the simplicity of their bottle designs. Proves that you don't have to go over the top with your labels to catch the eye.

Look-Jet black with a brownish white layer of foam. Looks like a root beer float topped with vanilla ice cream.

Smell-very light vanilla in the nose. Even lighter roast. It also feels like I can smell the oak barrel in my nose.

Taste-The vanilla bean hits your right on the lips. I don't consider myself a vanilla bean guy but it's very enjoyable as the first flavor.

Mouth-Full bodied. Very dry. You can taste the oak barrel aging...if that makes sense. Almost like a burnt toast/roasty flavor.

Overall-I different stout experience than I'm used to. I'm finding I like these stouts a bit more than the oatmeal stouts or stouts with a ton of coffee in them. The Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro was more enjoyable to me than this...but still, a solid stout.

About Mean Old Tom:

Our American-style stout aged on organic vanilla beans. Intense notes of coffee and dark chocolate lead way to subtle notes of natural vanilla. Flaked oats generate a silky mouthfeel.
